Criticisms of Security Council : Ignored by Members : French Unilateralism

  • French Act Unilaterally When Their Interests are at Stake -- France is a world-beater at using international institutions to constrain others (notably the United States) while ignoring them when its own national interests are in play. • The French Interventionist Itch -- The French are getting that interventionist itch again. It strikes them every so often, with no apparent pattern. There seems to be neither a temporal rhythm nor a moral or geopolitical issue that kicks it off, unless it is the very idea that some Frenchman, somewhere in the world, may be in some danger.
